How Claude limits work

A short session allowance and a weekly allowance can both constrain the same work. Model-specific rules can add another limit.

Pro, Max and Team subscription limits. Enterprise contracts and API billing can differ.

“I pay monthly. Why am I limited already?”
Monthly payment

Buys access to your plan. It does not buy unlimited usage until next month.

Used up after two hours. Why wait until 14:00?

In this example, the whole allowance was spent by 11:00. The five-hour window still ends at 14:00. Paying monthly does not remove this cap.

Weekly usage70%

Five hours describes the reset window, not five guaranteed hours of continuous work. An intensive task can use the allowance much sooner.

Is this a rolling window?

A continuously rolling window releases capacity as older activity leaves the lookback period. A scheduled reset refreshes an allowance at a stated time. They are different mechanisms. These illustrations show a reset boundary, not a promise that every message expires individually after five hours or seven days.

When does Claude reset?

Pro and Max sessions reset every five hours. Their weekly reset has a fixed account-specific schedule, shown in Settings > Usage. Team weekly allowances are also assigned per member.

The model can change what is included

Fable 5 and 5.1 use credits on Pro and standard seats. Max and eligible premium seats include Fable use up to 50% of their weekly allowance. That is part of the weekly pool, not an extra 50%.

Does Claude Code share the allowance?

The Agent SDK billing change was paused. With subscription authentication, the Agent SDK and claude -p still draw from subscription limits; the announced replacement monthly credit is unavailable. API-key billing is a different route.

Agent SDK update

What if included usage runs out?

Eligible paid accounts can enable prepaid usage credits at standard API rates, with spending controls. Credits are additional charges, not an increase in the subscription allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Max plan remove all limits?

No. Max increases per-session capacity but retains weekly and possible model or feature limits.

Is the weekly reset based on when I first send a message?

For Pro and Max, the documented weekly reset is a fixed schedule assigned to your account.
